Don’t get hacked!

It is more than your website at stake when getting hacked.

How websites get hacked most of the time is by interjecting code through and input. WordPress has sanitization callbacks to make sure what is being enter into the database is valid information. Over the years I have had a few encounters with hacking. When I first started out I failed to validate an input’s content and someone enter a snippet of Javascript that cause the page to redirect to another site.

I was watching episode three of Star Wars series and it was taken back by the following dialog.

Anakin: “You know the Dark Side?”

Palpatine: “Anakin, if one is to understand the great mystery, one must study all its aspects, not just the dogmatic, narrow view of the Jedi. If you wish to become a complete and wise leader, you must embrace a larger view of the Force.”

Star Wars Quotes

This was something I had just been discussing with my nephew. Not only do we need to check information before we allow it to get into our websites code and database we need to do this with our minds. Anakin failed to do this. Palpatine hack Anakin’s brain when he gave him the same old line that the serpent gave Eve. Don’t believe in a dogmatic and narrow view! This has been pass on and on through the ages with the same terrible ending. We think we are getting just what we want, but the reality is we get just the opposite.

If your theme or plugin is not developed correctly your site can get hacked. If users are allowed to enter unchecked data terrible things will happen. You need to be very narrow and dogmatic about what you want to be entered. If you are requesting a phone number it needs to be ten numbers, because at the least you may not be able contact them, but at the worst your site could go down.

This is something that we all need to contemplate as people. We need to be dogmatic in the fundamental principles of life. The Bible is the riches source of this foundational thinking. Sure a million phone numbers can be entered into a phone number input, but they must be numbers. So it is with God’s word, it does not limit our ability to be creative and individualized, but it does keep us from getting hacked.
